100 Years

Foundation stone, laid in 1910.

Abbey Catholic Primary School celebrates 100 years as a Junior and Infant School in 2010, although Parish records show that an Infant School was in place from the mid 1800's.

We began our year of 100th Birthday celebrations with a whole school Mass on March 29th 2010, celebrating the 100th anniversary of The Right Rev. Edward Ilsley visiting our school.

We had a special 100th Birthday Celebration Cake made and each child and adult in school enjoyed a piece.

We are planning a year of celebrations from March 2010 through to March 2011. The installation of a 'trim trail' in our playground is timetabled for May 2010 as a birthday gift for all the children in school.

We all love our school Trim Trail - to celebrate the school's birthday.

During the Summer term, children will be creating mural designs for a mosaic which will be displayed outside the front of school, with each member of the current school community placing a tile in the mosaic.

A garden party is planned for children, staff and Governors on Thursday 22nd July where all members of the school community will come to school in 1910 costume.

Further celebrations are planned. Watch this space!

Edwardian Day - 22 July 2010

To continue our 100 years celebrations, the whole school enjoyed an Edwardian theme day on the last day of Summer term. Children and staff had a tremendous time dressed in Edwardian outfits imagining what it might have been like at the Abbey School 100 years ago. From examining the School Log Book we know one thing that was very different; 100 years ago our school had 40 pupils, today we have over 400! Have a look at our photographs - do you think we look like real Edwardians?

We had great fun in our Edwardian costumes.

We enjoyed seeing each other's outfits.

We think we look like real Edwardian children.

We're not sure we would have liked school 100 years ago.

Our teachers thought this sign was very funny.

It would have been normal for children to carry out dangerous jobs 100 years ago.

Dressing up for Edwardian Day was fun.

It was tricky trying to look so miserable!

Mr Henderson came to talk about the Penny Farthing.

Getting on and off the Penny Farthing was not as difficult as it looks!

Fun Day - 29 March 2010

We started our 100 year Birthday Celebrations with a 'fun day' in school. Everyone in school enoyed a slice of birthday cake. We invited Mr Tierney in to school to share our celebrations, he had a wonderful time and even took some cake home!

We were delighted Mr Tierney came to join the party.
